To make the most out of your Android TV or Google TV, you should make sure to always keep it up to date with the latest firmware and software updates from Sony and Google. Updates for your TV will include key features and applications, as well as bug fixes and feature improvements.Find out more about the benefits of software updates

IMPORTANT: Your TV must be connected to the Internet through a wired or wireless network in order to perform system updates. Alternatively, you can download the updates to a USB flash drive, and install the update on the TV via USB (see section 3 of this article).

In order to receive software updates, make sure the Automatically check for update or Automatic software download setting on your TV is turned ON.

For W8K, X74K, X75K, W8, X7, X74H and X75H Series: Proceed to Section 2. Download and Install updates directly from the Internet. These models always receive software updates automatically and do not have the settings to change that option. When the TV receives an update, a notification message for new software appears on the screen without any settings.For Google TV models and some Android TVs released from 2018 to 2020 listed below: Target model list 2022 models: A80K, A90K, A95K, X80K, X81K (43-75), X85K, X90K (55-85), X90K, X90S (50), X95K, Z9K, KM-X80K, KM-X85K, XRM-A80K, XRM-A90K, XRM-A95K, XRM-X90K, XRM-X95K, XRM-Z9K series2021 models: X80J, X81J, X85J, X86J, X90J (50-75, 100), X95J, KM-X80J, KM-X85J, Z9J, A80J, A90J, XRM-Z9J, XRM-X90J, XRM-X95J, XRM-A80J, XRM-A90J series2020 models: X80H, X85H, X90H, X91H, X95H (49, 85), X95H (55, 65, 75), Z8H, A8H series2019 models: A9G, Z9G, X95G, X85G (55, 65, 75, 85) series2018 models: A9F, Z9F series

If the Automatically check for update setting is turned ON, the TV checks whether there is any new software to be downloaded when the TV is turned on or the TV is connected to the Internet.

For other Android TV models: If the Automatic software download setting is turned ON, the TV will start downloading updates automatically when in Standby mode.

Follow these steps to check whether the Automatically check for update or Automatic software download setting is turned ON or OFF:

For Google TV models:

On the remote control, press the (Quick Settings) button.Select Settings.Select System.Select About.Select System software update. NOTE: If your remote control has a HELP button, you can also display the System software update screen by pressing the HELP button and then selecting Top support solutions.Check that the Automatically check for update setting is set to ON. NOTE: If the Automatically check for update settings is turned OFF, check manually if there is an update. To check it manually, select System software update with the procedure above, and then select Software update.

For Android TV models:

On the remote control, press the HOME button.Select Help. NOTES: For Android™ 9 or Android 8.0, select Apps, then select Help.If your remote control has a HELP button, you can also display the Help screen by pressing the HELP button. The next steps will depend on your TV menu options: Select Status & Diagnostics — System software updateSelect System software update. NOTE: The image below is an example of a TV with Android 6.0 or later. Image of the Help screen Check that the Automatically check for update or Automatic software download setting is set to ON. NOTE: If the Automatically check for update or Automatic software download settings are turned OFF, check manually if there is an update. To check it manually, select System software update with the procedure above, and then select Check for a system software update or Software update.

You must agree to the Sony Privacy Policy in order to receive software downloads.

Even if Automatic software download is set to ON, the TV will not receive software updates through the Internet until you agree to the Sony Privacy Policy. You can review and agree to the Sony Privacy Policy at any time by pressing the HELP button on the remote control — Privacy Setting.

If you had disagreed to the Sony Privacy Policy during the initial setup of the TV, proceed as follows to make sure you receive the firmware updates: Agree to the Sony Privacy Policy by pressing the HELP button on the remote control — Privacy Setting.Make sure the Automatic software download setting is set to ON by pressing the HELP button on the remote control — System software update — Automatic software download.Manually check for updates once, by pressing the HELP button on the remote control — System software update — Software update. 2. A software update is available if a notification message for new software appears when you turn on the TV (the message will disappear automatically).When you select UPDATE, the download and installation will start.NOTES:

The software update will take about 15 minutes. You can use your TV as usual during an update. Even if you turn off the TV, the update proceeds. IMPORTANT: Do not unplug the AC power cord (mains lead) from the outlet because the software update will stop.When you turn on the TV after an update is completed, the TV will start with new software. If you turn off the TV after an update, the remote control may not work for about 2 to 3 minutes.The message is shown only if Automatically check for update is set to ON. The message is shown for about 15 seconds, and if the message disappears once, the message will not be displayed until 12 hours have passed since the previous message. If the message disappears and you want to update the software immediately, you need to update the software manually from the Software update in the System software update menu. For W8K, X74K, X75K, W8, X7, X74H and X75H Series:

IMPORTANT: 

Agree to the Sony Privacy Policy in order to receive software download.Installing an update can take up to 15 minutes, during which time you will not be able to use your television, and a screen with an update icon will be displayed. If a software update is available, a notification will be displayed in the upper right of the Home screen, and a banner will appear at the top of the menu. (the notification message will disappear automatically). NOTE: A notification will also be displayed on the other input screen when an update is available.

The next steps will depend on your TV menu options: Hold the HOME button. Then follow the onscreen instructions to select the System software update banner.

Select Details on the banner, and follow the onscreen instructions.

Select Restart Now or Download to start the installation.

NOTE: You can also perform the software update with the following procedure: On the remote control, press the (Quick Settings) button — SettingsSystem or Device Preferences — About — System Update.

WARNING: There is a risk of hardware damage. During the installation of the update, do not press any buttons, power off the TV, or disconnect it from the AC power outlet. Loss of power during the installation of the firmware update may cause the TV set to become unresponsive or require repair.

For other Android TV models:

The TV will ask if you wish to proceed with the download. Select UPDATE NOW to continue.NOTE: The image below is an example of the display screen.

NOTES:

You can use your TV normally while it is downloading an update.If you select UPDATE LATER, a screen asking you whether to start the software update will be displayed when you turn off the TV. If you select No on that screen, the message will be displayed again the next time you turn on the TV. If you select Yes, the update will start.

Once the TV finishes downloading an update, it will then ask if you wish to install it. Select OK to accept and start the installation. Alternatively, you can select Cancel, and proceed later with the installation of the update.

IMPORTANT: Be advised that installing an update can take up to 30 minutes, a time during which you will not be able to use your TV, and a screen with an update icon will be displayed.

WARNING: There is a risk of hardware damage. During the installation of the update, do not press any buttons, power off the TV, or disconnect it from the AC power outlet. Loss of power during the installation of the firmware update may cause the TV set to become unresponsive or require a repair.

As soon as the installation of the update finishes, you can use your TV normally again.

3. Download and Install updates using a USB flash drive

If your TV doesn't have Internet access and/or you wish to do the update manually, you can do so using a USB flash drive, by downloading the update from the Sony support website.

NOTES:

The USB flash drive must meet the following conditions: The drive must be formatted in FAT16, FAT32, exFAT, or NTFSThe drive will need to have sufficient free space to accommodate the update fileThe update file must be saved in the root directory of the drive The update can fail even when using a USB flash drive that meets the above conditions, depending on the size and directory structure of other files on the drive. If the update does fail, delete other files and try again with only the update file saved in the USB flash drive. If the update still fails, format the USB flash drive to FAT32 and try again.

To update using a USB flash drive, proceed as follows:

Go to the Sony support website.Type your TV model name in the search box.

If you do not know what your model number is, please check the sticker at the lower-left corner of your TV's back panel.

Go to the Downloads section and proceed to the update page.

Follow the instructions on the website to download the update to a USB flash drive, and perform the update on your TV.
